(The Post News)– The Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed criminal charges against the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane, accusing her of misleading Parliament regarding appointments linked to the African National Congress (ANC). The DA also plans to vote against her department’s budget, along with other budgets led by ministers accused of corruption.
According to a statement from DA National Spokesperson MP Karabo Khakhau, the charges were lodged at the Cape Town Central Police Station following Nkabane’s repeated claims to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training.
Nkabane allegedly stated that an “independent” panel oversaw the appointment process for Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) boards, but evidence suggests the panel was composed of her department officials and political allies, including her chief of staff and an ANC Youth League member.
Khakhau also highlighted that Minister Nkabane falsely named Advocate Terry Motau, a senior counsel, as the chair of this panel. However, Motau has denied any involvement in the process in a written statement.
Khakhau pointed out that this is an intentional attempt to mislead Parliament and South Africans, not a case of poor decision-making. She added that the DA will not permit ministers who fabricate information or rig procedures to continue in office, adding that Minister Nkabane has breached the law and her oath of office.
Moreover, Khakhau emphasized the importance of respecting Parliament’s authority and called for urgent action to dismantle what she described as a corrupt network within the government.
