Missing one-week-old Mogamat Imaad Shamar found safe in a Tafelsig home.
(The Post News)- On Monday evening, police confirmed that the now nearly two-week-old baby, Mogamat Imaad Shamar, was found safe in Tafelsig. A suspect has been arrested and remains in custody.
The Post News reported that the baby’s mother, Imaan Shamar, opened a case of kidnapping with Bellville SAPS on Saturday, 28 June 2025. The mother had been shopping at Middestad Mall, Bellville, when she rushed to the bathroom after feeling sick, leaving the baby with the woman accompanying her. When she returned, the woman had disappeared with the baby.
The case was swiftly taken up by the Provincial Organised Crime: Anti-Kidnapping Investigation Unit, working alongside Crime Intelligence and the Bellville Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the baby was found unharmed. A 37-year-old woman was arrested at a residence in Honolulu Street, Tafelsig, in connection with the kidnapping. She remains in custody and is expected to appear soon in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.
The motive for the kidnapping or any connection between the suspect and the mother has not been revealed. The investigation is ongoing.
The baby’s grandmother, Nabilah Saghar, expressed the family’s gratitude. “It has been a rough few days for the family, but we are so grateful for the police’s hard work in finding our little boy,” she said.
Community members have also praised the authorities’ quick response on social media.
