(The Post News)– Lloyd Harris is through to the second round of Wimbledon 2025, and he didn’t make it easy for himself. The South African had to dig deep, coming back from two sets down to defeat rising American Alex Michelsen in a nail-biting five-set battle that stretched over three and a half hours.
Coming in through the qualifiers, Harris looked out of sorts in the early stages, dropping the first two sets 3-6 and 4-6. But he held his nerve in the third, snatching a tense tiebreak before cruising through the fourth set 6-2. The deciding set had fans on edge, but Harris held strong in the final tiebreak, clinching it 11-9.
A key turning point came when Harris saved a match point, showing ice-cold composure under pressure. His serve was on fire throughout; he hit 34 aces and dominated his first serve points, winning 87% of them.
The win builds on Harris’s strong qualifying run, which included a four-set victory over France’s Hugo Grenier. It also signals a return to form for the Capetonian, who’s been working his way back from injuries that nearly sidelined his career.
Next up, he’ll face either 14th seed Ben Shelton or Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci, a match delayed by fading light. Whoever stands across the net, one thing’s clear: Harris is back, and he’s not here to make up the numbers.
