(The Post News)- Family of Suspected Infant Abductor Claims 37-Year-Old Woman Suspected of Abducting an Infant in Cape Town is Reported to Have Allegedly Persuaded Her Family to Believe That She Was Pregnant and Had Given Birth to the Baby.
The woman is due to make her first appearance in court on Thursday, 03 July 2025, following her arrest earlier in the week. The 37-year-old’s arrest comes after the tragic event where a 9-day-old infant was abducted at a mall in Bellville, Cape Town, the weekend before her arrest. Authorities found the baby in a home in Tafelsig after tracking the suspect and returned the baby to its rightful family on Monday evening.
The baby’s family expressed their relief and happiness upon finding the baby. The mother of the baby, Mogamat Imaad Sharmar, said she and her family had quite an emotional time upon finding the baby, as it was even the first time the father of the baby met him. She said that she broke down as soon as she was reunited with the baby.
The mother explained the events leading up to the baby’s kidnapping, saying that the suspect initially approached her in May as an individual who is part of a community project that, amongst other things related to pregnancy, aims to help new mothers. She said that the suspect had given her something to drink, and shortly after, she began to feel unwell. “I told her I need to sit down, my head is feeling dizzy… I vomited in the bin, and that’s when we went to the toilet. At that time, she was already holding him. And then when I got into the toilet, that’s when she then told me she’s going to get me at the benches, and when I got there, she wasn’t there. I checked right through the mall until one of the guys who saw us standing in line by the toilet told me my mother left, because he assumed that she was my mother.” She spoke.
According to reports, the mother of the 37-year-old suspect stated that the suspect had convinced her family that she was indeed carrying a baby and that she had undergone a C-section to deliver the baby. The family of the suspect maintains that they had no clue whatsoever that the infant brought to their home last weekend was abducted.
