(The Post News)– A deadly shooting spree rocked Mitchells Plain on Thursday afternoon, leaving five people dead and seven wounded across multiple locations. Police responded quickly to reports of shootings at several crime scenes in Mitchells Plain, including Beacon Valley, Tafelsig, and Town Centre.
The alerts began at approximately 12:30 PM, when authorities were informed of a shooting at a tuck shop in Beaconvalley. In that incident, it was confirmed that two died at the scene, and three others were injured.
Shortly afterwards, another shooting took place at a second tuck shop in Beacon Valley, where four people were shot. One person was killed, and three others were wounded.
A non-tuckshop-related third shooting left another person injured in Beacon Valley. Separate shootings in Tafelsig and Town Centre each claimed a life.
Police have confirmed that all incidents are suspected to be linked to gang activity.
“Murder and attempted murder cases have been opened. Detectives attached to the Anti-Gang Unit are investigating,” said Brigadier Novela Potelwa in a media statement.
Safety and Security Mayco member JP Smith stated that the city is increasing its support to SAPS by deploying extra resources to Mitchells Plain. “We have made nearly 60 personnel available from LEAP, the Metro Police Tactical Response Unit, and the Traffic Services’ Roadblock Unit,” Smith detailed.
The advocacy group Fight Against Crime SA (FACSA) has declared Mitchell’s Plain a Red Zone and urgently called for the implementation of the SAPS 72-hour action plan to hunt down those responsible and restore calm. FACSA has urged residents to “stay indoors, stay alert, and avoid the affected areas.”
Authorities remain determined to apprehend those responsible and bring calm back to the shaken community. The manhunt continues, with no arrests made yet. Both authorities and FACSA are appealing to the public for any information that could help identify and capture the perpetrators.
