(The Post News)– Russia has become the first country in the world to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. Moscow’s decision came after accepting the credentials of a new Afghan ambassador, marking a profound diplomatic shift and a step forward in relations with the Taliban government.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented that this recognition might enhance relations and cooperation in different spheres. The ministry welcomed the recognition, noting that the official acknowledgment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is expected to boost bilateral collaboration in different spheres.
Meanwhile, Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting minister of Afghanistan, declared that this was a courageous step that other states must follow. “Now that the process of recognition has started, Russia was ahead of everyone,” he was caught on tape saying while meeting the Russian ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov in Kabul.
The collapse of the Afghan government that followed the departure of the U.S. forces in August 2021 saw the return of the Taliban. Since then, no country has openly recognized the Taliban as the Afghan government due to the Taliban’s lack of adherence to international law rules.
