(The Post News)- Nico Williams has signed a monumental five‑year contract extension. Stretching to 2035 with his hometown club, firmly rejecting advances from Barcelona and establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Basque side’s future.
The agreement ties Williams down for an additional ten seasons. Uplifts his release clause by more than 50%, reportedly nudging it from around €58 million to near the €90 to 100 million mark.
In a statement released alongside a poignant video in Bilbao. Where Williams spray painted “2035” on a mural of himself. The 22‑year‑old swore allegiance to the club, “When it comes down to decisions, my heart matters most. I am where I want to be, with my people. This is my home.”
Barcelona had pursued Williams for the second consecutive summer. Their camp led by sporting director Deco. Had been in talks and reportedly believed a deal was imminent. President Joan Laporta even expressed readiness to trigger the existing €58 million release clause.
Yet, the Catalan club was taken aback on July 4 when Athletic’s announcement came without warning leaving Barça feeling shocked and angry. Decrying that they had been played by Williams and his entourage using the situation as leverage.
Barcelona had believed they had secured a four or five year personal terms agreement anticipating activation of the clause. But Athletic moved swiftly to not only outbid Barça. Barça was beaten in contract terms but also to strengthen Williams’ commitment. Turning what initially appeared a two week negotiation, into nothing short of a public relations blow to Barcelona.
