(The Post News)- Diogo Jota, a star for Portugal and Liverpool, was likely speeding when his car veered off a Spanish motorway last week, killing him and his brother, according to Spanish authorities on Tuesday. The terrible deaths of Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, on July 3, less than two weeks after the striker’s nuptials, devastated the football community.
As part of a continuing investigation, the Civil Guard stated, “the marks left by one of the vehicle’s wheels… everything points to a possible excessive speed beyond the road’s speed limit”. In Spain, the average speed limit on motorways is 120 km/h (75 miles per hour).
The collision occurred on a rather straight section of road that was about to bend on the A-52 in the northwest province of Zamora. According to the Civil Guard, the car crashed and caught fire because a tyre likely blew out when it was passing.
The force went on to say on Tuesday that all the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota. Jota had shared a video of his June 22 wedding to girlfriend Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children, just hours prior to the catastrophe.
According to Portuguese and UK media, Jota was avoiding a flight on medical advise following a recent lung operation in order to drive to the northern Spanish port of Santander, to catch a ferry to England for the start of Liverpool’s preseason training.
Relatives and friends, political figures and prominent athletes from Portugal and Liverpool attended the funeral on Saturday in the Gondomar area of Porto. Fans and former players have left a sea of flowers, shirts, scarves, and photos at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium as part of a site of memorial.
