(The Post News)- An 18-year-old Russian tourist has been rescued after spending a terrifying night lost in stormy conditions while hiking alone in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve near Stellenbosch.
The teenager set out on the popular but demanding Panorama Circuit Trail around 10 a.m. on Thursday, having planned the route online. Although prepared for a day hike in fair weather, he was caught off guard when sudden, heavy rains swept through the region, rapidly transforming safe trails into dangerous torrents.
As conditions worsened by the afternoon, large sections of the trail became impassable, with rushing water cascading down the steep mountain slopes. The hiker attempted to turn back but became stranded. Around 4 p.m., he managed to send a distress message to a friend, saying he was exhausted and in danger. His phone then lost power, leaving him alone in cold, wet conditions as night fell.
He spent the night sheltered among rocks, exposed to the elements. At first light on Friday, he began moving again, trying to make his way back to safety.
Emergency medical personnel treated him on-site for hypothermia before transporting him to a local hospital. The rescue operation concluded shortly after 4 p.m.
WSAR spokesperson David Nel emphasized the unpredictability of mountain conditions and the importance of proper preparation.
“This incident highlights how quickly things can go wrong in the mountains,” he said. “The mountains are beautiful, but they demand respect and preparation. We strongly encourage all outdoor enthusiasts to take weather warnings seriously and prioritize safety at all times.”
Nel also stressed that hikers should never venture out alone and should carry suitable clothing, food, water, and emergency gear, along with access to the correct emergency numbers.
WSAR extended its thanks to all the rescue team members involved and wished the teen a full and speedy recovery.
