(The Post News)- On July 9, 2025, Kenya’s youth-widely known as Gen Z, led nationwide protests across the country demanding government reform and calling for a complete transformation to the country’s leadership.
More than 107 individuals were injured, and over 500 were arrested during the unrest, which also saw extensive property damage, including looting and destruction of supermarkets.
Kenya’s Gen Z youth are protesting in outrage over economic hardship caused under President Ruto’s leadership. Protesters are mobilizing as a result of the death of activist Albert Ojwang in police, unemployment rate. Protesters are also accusing President Ruto of corruption and unfair taxation.
However, President Ruto disagrees with the protester’s demands. Ruto believes that the protesters are too young to initiate a nationwide march and also believe they are being funded to revolt against the government.
Senior Africa Analyst at Risk Intelligence firm Verisk Maplecroft, Mucanid Durmaz, adds that ongoing economic struggles and widespread accusations of police brutality present significant obstacles to President Ruto’s hope for re-election in 2027.
” We want to be heard by the President Ruto. We are unable to feed our families. We want President Ruto to act with determination,” said a 22 year old Festus Muiruri.
Since Monday, the number of deaths resulting from the anti-government protests in Kenya has climbed to 31.
