(The Post News)- In a dramatic turn in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, key witness Absolom Zungu has submitted an affidavit denying that he ever made a sworn statement to Brigadier Bongani Gininda, the lead investigating officer in the case.
According to Sunday World, Zungu filed the affidavit at the Newcastle Police Station, where he made serious allegations against Gininda, accusing him of fabricating evidence and attempting to manipulate his testimony.
Zungu is the same individual whose alleged statement reportedly led to the arrest of two of the five accused — Muzi Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi, in the ongoing trial.
Zungu claims he was shocked when Gininda mentioned his name in court and claimed he had made a sworn statement. He further alleges that Gininda tried to pressure him into testifying — a request he says he refused.
In his affidavit, Zungu states that he met Gininda in 2023 in Newcastle, accompanied by a white woman. During this meeting, Gininda allegedly urged him to implicate Sibiya and Ntanzi in the 2014 murder of the former Bafana Bafana captain.
While testifying, Brigadier Gininda told the court that Zungu’s sworn statement was instrumental in the arrests of Sibiya and Ntanzi.
“On the 17th of November 2019, Constable Zungu brought the father, who then gave me a statement implicating accused No. 1 and No. 2. Those names are in the sworn affidavit for the first time,” Gininda testified.
The five accused are facing charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The court is currently conducting an in loco inspection.
