Madagascar’s first court-ordered surgical castration sentence aims to strengthen justice amid rising child sexual abuse cases.
(The Post News)- In what marks a first on the Indian Ocean Island nation, a Madagascar court has ruled that a man be surgically castrated after being found guilty of raping and attempting to kill a six-year-old girl in Imerintsiatosika, 30 km west of Antananarivo, in 2024.
Judicial official Didier Razafindralambo confirmed on July 10 that the court handed down a life sentence with hard labor alongside the unprecedented castration order.
“This decision is a strong and significant response from the justice system, intended also to serve as a warning to anyone with similar malicious intentions,” Razafindralambo said in a video message released by the Ministry of Justice.
The sentencing follows a troubling surge in cases involving the sexual abuse of children aged 10 and under. In response, Madagascar introduced a new law in 2024 that allows for surgical castration as part of the punishment for certain sexual offenses.
Other countries, including Poland and South Korea, as well as several U.S. states, use chemical castration, a reversible treatment involving continuous drug administration, as a penalty for sexual offenses. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is currently debating whether to introduce this measure.
