The match was a nail-biter from the start, with both sides matching each other goal for goal. South Africa edged ahead at the end of the first quarter, leading 9-7, but Malawi turned up the heat in the second. With the crowd roaring after every play, the Malawians found their rhythm and snuck into the halftime break with a narrow 17-16 lead.
But the defending champions came back fired up. Energised by the sound of Shosholoza echoing through the arena, they quickly levelled the scores and began to pull away. After a fast-paced third quarter, Team SA had created some breathing room, finishing the period 29-22.
Malawi didn’t go down without a fight, clawing back in the final minutes and putting South Africa under real pressure. But the young South Africans stayed composed, defending with heart and sealing a well-earned victory.
Coach Emily Mathosa praised her team’s resilience, saying she always believed they had more to give after a slow first half. Captain Zahrah Noah echoed the pride, saying the support from the crowd was the boost they needed to push through.
With their hearts, talent, and determination on full display, this golden generation of players looks set to carry the future of South African netball.
