(The Post News)- Nkyayezi Mhlongo, a 33-year-old HR Director at Pace Car Rental, is a shining example of leadership and determination. With a title that many still dream of, Mhlongo’s real power lies in the quiet revolution she leads daily: bringing empathy, discipline, and diversity to an industry where women, particularly black women, are still underrepresented at the executive level.
Raised in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, Mhlongo’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources, which served as a launchpad for her successful career. Today, she oversees people strategy, transformation, and culture across more than 500 employees at Pace Car Rental.
As a devoted mother of a bright and curious 9-year-old daughter, Mhlongo balances high-stakes decision-making with school runs and homework, showcasing her version of modern leadership. “It’s not always easy,” she admits, “but I’ve learned that showing up fully—at work and at home—is the greatest example I can give my child.”
Mhlongo’s leadership is marked by intuition, accountability, and the quiet insistence that people-first policies aren’t soft—they’re smart. She has pioneered inclusive hiring strategies and created employee wellness systems that actually work, driving transformation from the inside out.
In a recent interview, Mhlongo shared her insights on being a successful single mother, her favorite recipes, books, and movies, as well as advice she would give to her younger self.
When asked about the secrets to being a successful single mother, Mhlongo emphasized the importance of structure, support, and softness. “Structure gives our days predictability and gives you time for rest… Support reminds me I don’t have to do it all alone… and softness, towards myself and my daughter, keeps us connected.”
Mhlongo also shared her love for sticky chicken wings and sweetcorn, a recipe she enjoys making with her daughter. “My daughter helps marinate the wings with cajun spice, soy sauce, honey, garlic, and a splash of BBQ sauce… It’s our go-to Friday night comfort meal.”
One of Mhlongo’s favorite books is “The Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes, which reminded her to say yes to herself, opportunities, rest, and being seen and heard. She also cited “The Pursuit of Happyness” as her favorite movie, which resonates with her as a single mom chasing both purpose and stability.
When asked what she would tell her younger self, Mhlongo replied, “You’re stronger than you think, and softer than the world expects – those are your superpowers. Don’t rush the becoming. Your persistence is needed in this world… Keep showing up, even when it’s hard, and protect your peace like it’s a full-time job.”
As a leader and a mother, Mhlongo is an inspiration to many. Her commitment to people-first policies and inclusive growth is driving transformation in her industry, and her story serves as a reminder that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.
