(The Post News)– Emotions ran high outside the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on Monday as Fleurhof community members and activists witnessed a shocking turn of events in the case of Jayden-Lee Meek.
For nearly two months, the community of Fleurhof has been calling for justice for 11-year-old Jayden-Lee, who was found dead outside his home after being reported missing by his mother. On Friday, police announced that a close family member had been arrested in connection with Jayden-Lee’s murder. What no one expected was that the suspect would be his mother, Tiffany Nicole Meek.
It was reported that the 31-year-old Tiffany Meek had instructed police not to search her flat during the early stages of the investigation.
An emotional Dereleen James, Member of Parliament, suggested that the accused would have been caught earlier if the police had searched her place. James also noted that the mother’s request that they not check her apartment should have served as a warning.
Moreover, according to James, analysis and case studies frequently reveal that the offenders are the people closest to the victim. James said that perhaps Jayden-Lee Meek’s life could have been saved if the police officers had been sent to the crime scene on the day Jayden was reported missing.
Police have faced criticism for their handling of the case—both from the community and from Tiffany herself, who had been vocal about the police’s slow response and alleged negligence in her child’s disappearance. The case has been postponed to 18 July 2025 for bail application.
