(The Post News)– South Africa is edging nearer to securing a Formula One Grand Prix, with Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie confirming that a pivotal meeting with F1 officials and major sponsors will happen within the next two weeks.
He told parliament the upcoming meeting will be attended by potential funders, including MTN, MultiChoice, Heineken, and others, who are willing to cover the estimated R2-billion cost of hosting the race, removing the need for government funding.
If approved, the race would return to Kyalami in 2027, marking the first South African Grand Prix since 1993. Kyalami has already received the green light for necessary upgrades from the FIA, motorsport’s global governing body. These changes won’t alter the 4.5 km layout but will improve safety features like run-off zones, fencing, and drainage.
Though Cape Town also submitted bids, all signs point to Kyalami as the frontrunner. McKenzie, a passionate supporter of motorsport, has been pushing for F1’s return since taking office in 2024. He believes it would offer major economic benefits, boosting tourism and creating temporary jobs.
He also stressed that a global championship should include Africa and that doubters would soon see the value in hosting the event.
