The MK Party has threatened legal and parliamentary action if President Cyril Ramaphosa does not reconsider the Mchunu decision by Friday.
The MK Party has given President Cyril Ramaphosa until Friday morning to reconsider his decision on Mchunu, saying failure to act will lead to a Constitutional Court challenge and a possible motion of no confidence over the Mchunu decision.
Through a legal letter sent by its attorneys, the MK Party serving as the official opposition says President Ramaphosa’s move is both unconstitutional and irrational. The correspondence raises concerns over Ramaphosa’s announcement to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on leave, appoint Professor Firoz Cachalia as acting minister from August 1, and initiate a Judicial Commission of Inquiry.
The MK Party, through its spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela, has questioned the credibility of the processes linked to the President’s decision. The party points to concerns raised by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who alleged that some parliamentarians may be involved in illegal activities.
The MK Party argues it would be problematic to establish parliamentary committees or judicial inquiries into political killings when individuals in these structures could themselves be implicated.
He emphasised the importance of parliamentary involvement as part of the broader response to the concerns raised in the Mchunu matter.
