Thee National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) confirmed the signing of a wage agreement with Bombela, the Gautrain operator.
Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola announced the breakthrough after a series of tense wage negotiations.
A certificate to strike had previously been issued by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
Speaking to The Post News, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, maintained that the union secured a 4.25% wage increase for its members. The housing allowance has been increased from R1,300 to R1400.
Hlubi-Majola says night shift and transport allowances were also raised, from R38 to R40.
Additionally, the KPI bonus rose from R9,600 to R10,116 in line with the wage increase.
She confirmed that the wage agreement is effective from 1 July 2025 and will run until 13 June 2026.
This ensures workers benefit from the improved terms over a full 12-month period.
NUMSA has welcomed this timeframe, saying it offers stability and fairness.
The backdating was one of the key demands secured during talks.
Hlubi-Majola acknowledged that the negotiations were difficult and took place under economic strain. The talks happened amid a low March Consumer Price Index (CPI) of just 2.7%.
Despite this, she said NUMSA succeeded in securing increases above inflation. All allowances, she noted, were raised by more than the 4.25% base wage hike.
