South African comedian and actor Oscar Mgudlwa, popularly known as Madluphuthu, has died.
His death was announced by his son, Asanda Mgudlwa, in a heartfelt tribute posted on Facebook.
“Ulale ngo xolo Tata. I love you and will forever love you, Madiba Dlomo,” the post read.
Mgudlwa was one of the trailblazers of the low-budget film industry in South Africa. His first appearance in a low-budget production was in a movie produced by Chicco Twala, with Moruti wa Tsotsi elevating him into the spotlight.
The comedian gained instant fame through his role as Madluphuthu in films such as My Sht Father*, My Lottery Ticket, and Madluphuthu 1 & 2. Audiences connected with his infectious humor and relatable characters.
Before rising to fame as a comedian and actor, Mgudlwa had a stint in the music industry. In 1998, he released an album titled Man Child of Mina Nawe, and in 2001, he collaborated with the late Kwaito star Mapaputsi on the track Izinja Zakhona.
