(The Post News)– Trade union Solidarity has warned passengers of potential flight disruptions as FlySafair pilots will embark on a two-week protected stay-away strike from Monday, 21 July, to 5 August 2025. This comes after wage negotiations between the airline and its flight crew reached a deadlock.
The union has warned passengers that during these two weeks, “no flights can be guaranteed,” as 88% of FlySafair pilots voted in favor of the strike. At an all-time low in their relationship, the strike was initially planned as a one-day protest but was extended after FlySafair issued a seven-day lockout against the striking pilots. The union described the airline’s response as retaliatory, accusing management of escalating tensions instead of returning to the negotiation table.
According to Solidarity Executive Officer Dirk Hermann, pilots are demanding fair pay, better working conditions, sufficient rest, and corrections for those still dealing with salary cuts introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, pilots have rejected FlySafair’s proposed 5.7% salary increase, calling it insufficient.
FlySafair, however, insists that a “large body of pilots” will not be participating in the strike. The airline has also made proactive adjustments to its flight schedules to minimize disruptions for passengers.
Meanwhile, passengers are encouraged to double-check their flight details on flysafair.co.za, watch for updates via SMS or email, and make free changes to their bookings if needed. FlySafair’s co-founder, Kirby Gordon, assured passengers that if there are any flight disruptions or changes, they will be notified using the contact details provided at the time of booking.
The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) is actively involved and working with both parties to find an effective and quick resolution.
