(The Post News)- Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has temporarily suspended the R126 monthly fixed electricity charge.
Addressing angry Tembisa residents during a meeting on Monday, Xhakaza said tariff consultations had been held with the community. He explained that the City of Ekurhuleni is not directly responsible for electricity tariff hikes, as these are mandated by Eskom through NERSA.
Xhakaza urged residents to continue signing petitions, saying this would help the municipality engage with relevant stakeholders to find permanent solutions.
The meeting followed protests in Tembisa, where residents blocked all entry and exit roads in response to the recent tariff increases imposed by the city.
Several roads were affected during the protest. It was reported that police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters who threw stones at officers. Two police vehicles were damaged during the protest.
Xhakaza announced that he would continue holding meetings with community representatives and Tembisa ward councillors.
He thanked residents for refraining from setting anything alight during the demonstration.
But the community is not happy with what the Mayor said, they are not happy because they were not given any time frame for the suspension.
