(The Post News)- The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes today in the High Court in Pretoria after a three-week recess, with the State expected to call its final witness.
Earlier this month, the trial was paused to allow for an in loco inspection in Vosloorus, the area where one of the accused, Muzi Sibiya, claims he was assaulted and coerced by police into confessing to the 2014 murder of the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa.
Sibiya alleged that during his arrest in May 2020, he was beaten, suffocated with a plastic bag, and forced to confess to the murder. His claims led the court, including Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, to visit the exact location where the alleged assault took place.
In the Meyiwa murder trial, Sibiya detailed, “I was handcuffed like this. I was seated like this; that’s when they put the plastic over me. Although I can’t say this is a specific place, I was at all times handcuffed, but there were no leg irons on my feet. And then I was made to sit like this, handcuffed, when they then started to put a plastic over me and started to assault me.”
Five men are on trial for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa, which occurred in October 2014 at the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo. The State maintains that the shooting was not a robbery, as initially reported, but a planned hit.
As the murder trial resumes, attention turns to final testimonies by witnesses, including the lead investigating officer in the Meyiwa murder trial, Brigadier Bongani Gininda, who has denied assaulting Sibiya. Another key witness, Absolom Zungu, has also appeared, denying that he made a sworn statement as alleged by Gininda.
The five accused face charges including premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They have pleaded not guilty to all the allegations.
The high-profile Meyiwa murder trial continues to draw strong public interest due to the ever-changing details revealed as the trial progresses.
