Tembisa residents block roads and clash with police as they protest against unaffordable electricity tariffs imposed by the City of Ekurhuleni.
The community of Tembisa is protesting against high electricity tariffs introduced by the City of Ekurhuleni for the 2025/2026 financial year. Roads leading to the area were closed at midnight.
Police reportedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters who were throwing stones at officers. Two police vehicles have been damaged.
In an effort to minimize further damage, Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has called an emergency meeting with relevant stakeholders.
Protesters say they can no longer afford electricity. A resident stated that the community stands united in its fight against the tariffs but condemned those using the protest as an opportunity to engage in criminal activities.
A community leader described the municipality’s actions as unjust and said the tariffs are not designed with Ekurhuleni residents in mind.
The community has vowed to continue their protest if should their cried not be heard.Mayor Xhakaza and City of Ekurhuleni officials are expected to meet with the community today.
