(The Post News)– Following days of heavy rainfall that caused widespread damage, President Lee Jae-myung designated six districts in South Korea as special disaster zones on Tuesday.
The rain has let up in South Korea, but reports indicate North Korea is experiencing heavy downpours. According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the death toll in South Korea stands at 19, with 9 people still missing and 2,549 displaced.
The ministry also reported that approximately 3,776 buildings, including homes, shops, and factories, require urgent cleanup efforts to remove water, debris, and mud. By declaring special disaster zones, including Gapeyeong near Seoul, President Lee enabled authorities to tap into emergency funding and administrative support to assist those affected.
Earlier, President Lee urged public officials to do everything in their power to locate missing individuals. According to a Realmeter survey conducted during the heavy rainfall, President Lee’s approval rating dropped to 62.2% from 64.6%.
