(The Post News)– The Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on National Security is set to be established, as the Police and Justice and Constitutional Development committees are currently meeting to finalize its terms of reference. This new committee will investigate pressing issues of national security, including allegations of political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The formation of this committee follows an urgent directive from National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza. Speaker Didiza instructed these two portfolio committees, along with the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, to investigate revelations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi alleged political interference at the highest levels within SAPS.
Last week, the committees concluded that an ad hoc committee would be the most effective mechanism to address these serious allegations. They are expected to present their recommendations to the National Assembly by Wednesday.
