(The post News)- Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has suspended his deputy Kenny Kunene, after was found by police at Katiso Molefe’s home, a suspect accused of killing Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka.
Sefoka was killed in November 2022 in Woodmead, Johannesburg. No arrests were made after the incident, after this month when four suspects were arrested and awaiting trial in court.
On Tuesday, McKenzie announced the suspension, stating that he would notify the Johannesburg Council about his decision, to allow investigations to take place without any hindrances.
“Kenny Kunene will be investigated and I’m gonna tell you who’s gonna investigate him, lawyers of good character. While he’s being investigated I’m going to remove him from being an MMC, I am going to write to them,” he said.
McKenzie said he is going to instruct his deputy to take a 30-day break from politics until the investigations are finalised, also adding that acting against Kunene is the hardest thing that he has ever done.
In an interview with eNCA, Kunene confirmed that he was at Molefe’s house during the police raid, and said he was accompanying a junior journalist that was scheduled to interview Molefe on murder allegations.
McKenzie had previously defended Kunene, posted on his X account that he believes his deputy and can never expect everyone to believe him hence they are launching a full investigation to prove what they already know.
Speaking to NewsroomAfrika, Kunene said his media company, called Africa News Global, has not been active, hence he saw an opportunity to interview Molefe.
“I was there to take the journalist to interview him. You would have seen that my Africa News Global hasn’t been active since I took office I have not got the time to focus on it. I have lost journalists that were working for me,” Kunene said.
Furthermore, Kunene said he has decided to offer opportunities to young journalists, with his media company’s approach being exclusive news, citing that it would have been a great opportunity for the junior journalist to interview Molefe since he has never been interviewed by any media company.
Kunene admitted to being in the wrong place at wrong time, but however, denied any close relationship with Molefe, saying that police checked his cellphone and did not find anything linking him to the suspect.
