(The Post News)- Authorities in South Kivu province believe up to 500 miners may be trapped beneath the rubble after a series of landslides struck eastern Congo. Rescue efforts are underway, with volunteers working tirelessly to recover more bodies and locate potential survivors, having already retrieved ten bodies since Sunday’s collapse in the remote mining area.
The exact number of casualties remains uncertain due to the informal nature of the mining operation, which makes it difficult to determine the precise number of people affected. The disaster may have also had a devastating impact on internally displaced people who had fled the ongoing fighting between government troops and M23 rebels in the region, adding to their already precarious situation.
Heavy rainfall in the hilly area triggered the landslides, which have also affected nearby villages, although fortunately, no casualties have been reported in these areas so far.
