(The Post News)- It was a special Thursday morning at Ottery Fire Station in Cape Town as firefighters took on an unexpected role, helping to deliver a baby boy inside the station.
Just after 5:30 in the morning on 24 July, a heavily pregnant woman arrived at the station, visibly distressed and in pain from what the firefighters quickly recognised as contractions. She informed them that she was only due to give birth the following day at Hanover Park Day Hospital, but her baby had clearly decided to come early.
The on-duty firefighters immediately sprang into action, with Platoon Commander Amesha Bachan – who is also a qualified ambulance emergency assistant – guiding the team on how best to assist with the delivery.
In a calm and swift delivery, at approximately 6:25 a.m., a healthy baby boy Lagen was born.
Both mother and baby were soon transported by ambulance to a nearby medical facility for further care and observation, and are reported to be doing well with no complications
City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, praised the firefighters for their swift and composed response.
“While our firefighters are trained to handle emergencies, the role of midwife doesn’t happen often,” said Smith. “I am glad our residents know where to go in an emergency, and it is heartwarming to see our staff step up to the plate every time.”
