Suspended Minister of police Senzo Mchunu in hot water with the City of uMhlathuze following his "reckless " remarks.
(The Post News)- The City of uMhlathuze has voiced its concern and disappointment over remarks made by the suspended Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, describing them as irresponsible and reckless.
Mchunu is on suspension issued by President Cyril Ramaphosa over crime-related allegations that were made by the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Mchunu commented about the tragic shooting incident that occurred at the municipal building in March last year, where two people were shot dead at the Umhlathuze municipal head office in Richards Bay after bodyguards exchanged firearms.
“The City wishes to remind the public that this incident, though deeply unfortunate, had nothing to do with the City’s leadership but only a personal altercation and feud between the two deceased individuals,” the city stated.
The city added that the law had taken its course and an arrest has since been made, which renders the matter sub judice.
“It is so unfortunate that someone who once held a position of national responsibility, and was trusted by South Africans for their safety and security, would make such insensitive and reckless comments for purely political expedience,” they said.
Moreover, the city reminded Mchunu of the legal implications he may find himself having, by commenting about matters that are under investigation.
They insisted that his reckless comments are not only undermining legal boundaries, but also reopening emotional wounds for those close to the deceased, who are still healing.
According to the city, the suspended Minister made these comments in an attempt to mobilising people to march against the city in support of South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) members. They regard Mchunu’s actions as interference in labour issues.
“The allegations currently facing Mr. Mchunu are extremely serious. Accusations of collusion with extremely dangerous criminals who are even a threat to state safety and security are no light matter,” the city stated.
The City further urged Mchunu to redirect his energy towards cooperating with the established commission of inquiry to clear his name, citing that he must refrain from attempting to regain political relevance through making reckless statements.
