(The Post News)– Nine Correctional Services officers from Limpopo have been released on bail of R1,500 each after being accused of fatally assaulting a male inmate in July 2024.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, preliminary investigations revealed that the inmate was allegedly assaulted by a group of individuals believed to be prison wardens. The inmate sustained severe injuries and later succumbed to them.
Ledwaba explained that the incident occurred in July 2024 and was initially reported as an inquest. Following a post-mortem examination, the cause of death was confirmed, and the charge was subsequently upgraded to murder.
The officers were first arrested in October 2024 but were released due to insufficient evidence at the time. Ledwaba stated that the investigation continued and, as new evidence emerged, the officers were rearrested.
The nine accused appeared in court on July 22, 2025, where they were each granted bail of R1,500. They have been identified as Victor Ramoroka (52), Victor Seakamela (59), Lutendo Vele (41), Christopher Mafela (33), Michael Ramabu (42), Anna Shai (41), Josephine Mphela (49), Obed Selolo (53), and Lucas Phihlela (54).
“The matter has been postponed to August 21, 2025,” said Colonel Ledwaba.
The group faces murder charges in connection with the fatal assault of the inmate.
