(The Post News)– Patriotic Alliance’s suspended deputy president, Kenny Kunene, has resigned as the City of Johannesburg MMC for Transport and as a councilor. In a resignation letter addressed to Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero, Kunene wrote that his resignation is effective immediately.
Kunene further noted that he is temporarily withdrawing from public life while his party appeases itself with the accusations made against him, which he maintains are baseless. He said that he has acknowledged that it would be best for the public if he waited for his record to be cleared before thinking about going back to “public service and duty.”
According to Kunene, his presence at Molefe’s residence was because he had taken a journalist there to interview Molefe, and he denied knowing him personally. However, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema dismissed Kunene’s explanation, calling it a “pure lie.” He also thanked Mayor Morero for entrusting him with the transport portfolio, noting that he believes that they contributed significantly to the construction and reconstruction of the city.
Kunene was suspended by PA president Gayton McKenzie after confirming that he had been found at the home of Katiso “KT” Molefe—the alleged mastermind behind the murder of DJ Sumbody and Armand Swart. Swart, an engineer and whistle-blower, was killed in 2024 after his company flagged alleged corruption in a Transnet tender. Meanwhile, in a letter to the party’s secretary-general, McKenzie stated that investigations into the allegations have already begun.
