(The Post News)– South Africa’s swimmers got their feet wet on Sunday as the World Aquatics Championships kicked off in Singapore, and while there were no final spots secured yet, there were plenty of promising signs.
Rebecca Meder clocked 2:11.68 in the morning to earn a place in the 200m individual medley semifinal. She then improved to 2:11.05 in the evening but finished seventh in her heat and just two places shy of the final. Despite the frustration, Meder reflected positively, calling 10th in the world a decent result, although she admitted she was expecting more given how training had been going. She’s keeping her spirits high ahead of her upcoming breaststroke events later this week.
Erin Gallagher also had a strong start, advancing to the 100m butterfly semis after a 57.48 swim. She led strongly in the first half of the race but settled for sixth in her semi with a time of 57.68. Although disappointed overall, she was encouraged by her early speed, especially ahead of her preferred 50 m butterfly event.
Other South Africans had mixed results in the heats, but there’s still plenty to look forward to as the meet continues.
