The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has firmly rejected mounting calls, mostly intensified by the United States (US), for the organisation to disarm.
In a televised address, Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem stated that the group’s decision on weapons are internal Lebanese affairs and accused those calling for disarmament of advancing Israel’s interests.
Washington has reportedly urged Lebanon to issue a formal cabinet resolution committing to Hezbollah dismantling its missile and drone capabilities before continuing talks with US special envoy Thomas Barrack on the ceasefire.
In this address, Qassem also accused the US of prioritising Israel’s interests over Lebanon’s security.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has called a cabinet meeting next week to review proposals related to enforcing and implementing the ceasefire, among other issues.
However, it seems unlikely that Hezbollah will comply with the US suggestions despite pressures from international and domestic parties. The group remains insistent that its arms are essential for Lebanon’s defence against ongoing Israeli aggression.
