(The Post News)- Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town is being transformed into a luxury residential and hospitality destination, with studio apartments set to start at R2.9 million.
The building, located at 111 Bree Street and originally known as City Park Hospital, will be redeveloped into Mama Shelter Residences Cape Town – a mixed-use property that will offer “high-end urban living”.
The former hospital will be converted into a 127-room hotel along with 62 branded apartments, including a premium three-bedroom penthouse priced at R23.3 million.
The luxurious apartments and hotel will have a concierge, a co-working area, a fitness facility, a rooftop pool and deck, and personalized services like pet sitting, yoga, babysitting, and even tattoo artist access.
According to the head of Pam Golding’s Western Cape region, the location, lifestyle amenities, and premium services make the property a profitable investment, as it will fulfil ongoing domestic and international demand.
Mama Shelter Residences Cape Town will also include 3,500 square metres of retail space, an Italian-themed rooftop restaurant and bar, and an eatery directly opening onto Bree Street.
Brand COO for Mama Shelter, Cedric Gobilliard, has described the Cape Town venue as “More than a hotel, more than a restaurant or a bar, Mama Shelter is a living place – a place to meet, eat, drink, sing and dream.”
The reimagined hospital’s construction is expected to be completed between July and September 2026 at the latest.
