(The Post News)- The ongoing civil war in Sudan has taken a devastating toll on children, with thirteen reported dead from severe malnutrition in the war-ravaged East Darfur region, according to the Sudan Doctors Network operating at Lagawa camp.
The conflict, now in its 27th month, has created dire humanitarian conditions, with food scarcity and malnutrition worsening rapidly. Medical professionals at the camp have raised alarm over the deteriorating situation, urgently appealing to international humanitarian organisations for immediate assistance.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Sudan Doctors Network called on global relief agencies to deliver emergency food supplies and basic medical care to vulnerable populations, particularly women, children, and pregnant women.
The United Nations (UN) also reported that since June, over 1,500 infections have been recorded, with disease outbreaks intensifying in the city of Tawila.
The humanitarian crisis stems from the ongoing civil war that erupted in 2023 between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Over 7,000 people have suffered repeated attacks since the conflict began, with thousands killed and more than 12 million people displaced from their homes.
The UN warns that nearly one million people are on the brink of famine as the fallout from the power struggle between the two military factions continues to escalate, making it one of the worst humanitarian disasters globally.
