(The Post News)– One of the most remarkable careers in Spurs’ recent history is coming to an end as captain Son Heung-min has announced that he will be leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The 33-year-old announced the decision during a news conference in Seoul on Friday, stating that it was made “from the heart and after careful consideration. He said that he believes that now is the right time, and striving in Europe with Tottenham was “a dream come true”—that is the memory he wishes to leave the fans with as a final gift.
Son, who paid an estimated £22 million to join Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, quickly won over the fans. With 454 games and 173 goals in ten seasons, he came in fifth on the team’s all-time scoring chart. He was appointed captain after Harry Kane left in 2023 because of his steadfast work ethic, leadership, and flair.
Among his accomplishments are his 2022 Premier League Golden Boot victory and his status as the first Asian player to score over 100 goals in the Premier League. His greatest accomplishment was leading Spurs to their first major win since 2008 and their first European trophy in 41 years, a 2-1 triumph in the May 2025 UEFA Europa League final.
According to club authorities, Son is leaving on his terms. He has a one-year deal with Spurs that will keep him until 2026, but he will depart this summer with the club’s approval. Thomas Frank, the head coach, declared, “Son departs as a legend. He has been this team’s soul, and we are honored that he has decided to retire after giving it his all.”
Son hasn’t disclosed where he plans to go next, but rumors have him joining Major League Soccer, where Los Angeles FC is the front-runner. Al Ittihad and Al Nassr, two Saudi Pro League teams, have also shown interest, although Son is rumored to like the MLS’s long-term prospects and way of life.
The odds strongly favor a move to the United States, according to bookies, with Saudi Arabia at 9/4 and MLS at 1/3 right now. Later this month, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will host a testimonial match when fans are expected to say goodbye. 2015–2025 are the club’s record years.
There were 454 appearances, 173 goals scored, 1 UEFA Europa League trophy won in 2025, and one Premier League Golden Boot award won in 2022. LAFC (MLS) is anticipated to be the next club. In addition to becoming a Tottenham legend, Son Heung-min is paving the way for Asian football players in Europe as he gets ready to start a new chapter. Future generations will be impacted by his Spurs legacy.
