In response, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a sharp warning, invoking Russia’s Cold War-era nuclear arsenal and cautioning the United States against escalating the situation. His comments have been widely viewed as a veiled threat, underscoring the serious risks of rising hostility.
Reacting promptly, President Trump ordered the repositioning of two U.S. nuclear submarines to waters near Russia. He criticized Medvedev’s remarks as “reckless” and warned that such provocations could result in unintended and dangerous consequences.
Meanwhile, Trump’s handling of foreign affairs has drawn criticism at home. Some U.S. observers suggest that his confrontational stance may serve to divert attention from domestic controversies. In particular, critics have linked his recent actions to the discreet transfer of a convicted associate of Jeffrey Epstein from a Florida prison to a minimum-security facility in Texas. This move has fueled accusations that Trump is seeking to avoid accountability amid renewed scrutiny over the Epstein scandal.
Amid the growing tensions, Fyodor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs, sought to downplay Trump’s statements regarding nuclear force. Lukyanov described Trump’s behavior as emotionally driven and spontaneous, likely catching even the U.S. military off guard. He noted that unless the verbal exchanges intensify, Trump may feel compelled to take real action, though for now the situation remains limited to rhetoric.
On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin refrained from responding directly to Trump’s remarks. Instead, he emphasized his desire to pursue peace between Russia and Ukraine, signaling a more measured approach amid the escalating tensions.
