Stellenbosch University is mourning the loss of a second-year theology student Chris Scheffers .
(The Post News)- A 19-year-old male student at Stellenbosch University was found dead at Dagbreek Men’s Residence this past Saturday.
The body of Chris Scheffers, a first-year theology student from Riebeek West, was discovered in his room after he hadn’t been seen for some time.
This raised flags for residence management, who described Scheffers as a student who was active in the Dagbreek community.
Van Wyk noted that he was lying on his back and all his belongings were accounted for and untouched, signaling no obvious signs of foul play. The investigation into the cause of his death remains open as authorities await the results of the post-mortem.
In the university’s student news outlet, Grant Leukes, head of Dagbreek residence, described Scheffers as “vibrant,” adding that he “will be missed dearly.”
Stellenbosch University’s acting vice-chancellor for learning and teaching, Professor Richard Stevens, extended condolences to Scheefers on behalf of the institution, adding, “The passing of a cherished young life leaves a deep and lasting ache within our university community,”.
A memorial service is reportedly being planned at Stellenbosch University to honour Scheffers, and the university has made counselling services available to students affected by his passing.
