(The Post News)– The Minister of International Relations, Justice Lamola, has revealed that mixed messages from South Africa may have undermined the government’s efforts to reach an agreement with the United States regarding trade tariffs.
This follows South Africa’s failed attempt to negotiate a rollback of the 30% tariff hike imposed by the US under President Donald Trump on South African exports.
Minister Lamola was part of a delegation of senators who recently traveled to Washington to maintain diplomatic dialogue with the US. Despite these efforts, the US upheld its tariff decision, placing pressure on South African exporters and prompting concern over future trade relations. The South African government is currently exploring ways to support local exporters impacted by the tariff increase.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Minister Lamola was joined by Minister of Trade and Industry, Parks Tau. Minister Tau criticized certain South African actors for failing to acknowledge the government’s attempts to repair ties with the US.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has blamed the government for not effectively negotiating on behalf of exporters. The DA argues that current trade policies are divisive and damaging to national unity.
According to the DA, whatever their political opinions, whether they work for opposition parties, non-governmental organizations, or the government, they all share a responsibility to protect South Africa’s interests when we are abroad. The party added that everyone, both inside and outside of government, must work together to protect the economy and jobs.
