Father formally charged with attempted murder of 4-year-old

(The Post News)- A man, 32, faces court Friday for allegedly trying to kill his 4-year-old daughter in Protea.

Following a tip-off about alleged child abuse in Eldorado Park, a man was taken into custody on Wednesday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lt Col Mavela Masondo reported that when officers got to the scene, they were led to a closed shack in the backyard. Inside, they discovered a man with two young children, a boy and a girl.

Masondo stated that the girl, who was lying on the bed, had visible head wounds, a swollen eye, and multiple bruises.

Identifying himself as the father, the man failed to give a consistent explanation for the child’s injuries.

Authorities detained the man believed to be the child’s father, and the injured girl was quickly taken to a healthcare centre. He now faces charges related to attempted murder and child abuse.

Masondo added that continued inquiries by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit resulted in the arrest of the child’s mother, who now faces a charge of defeating the ends of justice.

Police say investigations are ongoing as the child recovers under medical supervision.
