(The Post News)- Numerous members of Operation Dudula were detained by Diepkloof Police in Soweto after an incident at a local hospital aimed at preventing undocumented migrants from accessing health care services. The group maintains that medical services should be prioritized for South African citizens and legally documented foreign nationals.
This campaign, initiated in June, seeks to restrict access to health care for illegal migrants.
Although the initiative has drawn criticism from government officials and advocacy organizations, some voices have expressed support, citing the heavy strain on the health care system.
Operation Dudula’s president, Zandile Dabula, reported difficulties in clarifying the charges against the detained members, noting that the accusations have changed multiple times. The South African Police Service (SAPS) continues to review the charges.
Initially, the group faced allegations of impersonating immigration officials and police officers.
However, after Operation Dudula pointed out that impersonation would involve presenting official identification or wearing authorized uniforms, the charges were adjusted to trespassing and public violence.
