(The Post News)- Mandla Buthelezi stands accused of shooting and killing 22-year-old Chesnay Keppler during an alleged domestic dispute in December 2024. The incident occurred in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg. Keppler, who worked as a Gauteng Crime Warden, was reportedly in a relationship with Buthelezi at the time of her death. The case has drawn significant public attention due to the nature of the charges and the individuals involved.
After months marked by delays, procedural issues, and multiple postponements, the awaited bail hearing is finally expected to get underway.
Buthelezi who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, is set to learn his fate regarding bail when proceedings resume at the Protea Magistrates’ Court today. Since his previous appearances which were conducted via video link from a correctional facility, the shift to a personal hearing is expected to mark a significant step forward in what has become a drawn-out legal process. The outcome of the bail hearing will decide whether he remains in custody as the case continues through the legal system.
The former police sergeant made his first appearance in court back in January, where his legal representative initially informed the court that he would not be seeking bail at that stage.
However, in a change of course, Buthelezi has since decided to pursue a formal bail application. In the meantime, family members and supporters of Chesnay Keppler are once again expected to gather outside the courthouse today. Their continued presence reflects an ongoing demand for justice and accountability in the case of the 22-year-old crime warden, whose death has sparked widespread concern and community outrage.
During the earlier court session, Trevor Keppler, father of the deceased said that the family is hopeful the court will deny the accused’s application for bail.“I am disappointed by the postponement, which occurred because the magistrate has yet to finalize the judgment. As a result, we will need to return on the 11th of August. He should remain in custody, and we hope that bail will be denied when the matter is heard next Monday,” he said.
