(The Post News)- National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, together with Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, visited the family of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni on Sunday to pay their respects and offer support following the tragic incident. The visit formed part of the police leadership’s ongoing efforts to stand by the families of officers affected in the line of duty.Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni was among a group of police officers who came under attack while responding to a reported business burglary in Schoemansdaal on Friday. The officers were conducting an operation at the scene when they were ambushed by a group of ten armed suspects.
The incident quickly escalated, turning what began as a routine response into a violent confrontation.Masemola has confirmed that six police officers have lost their lives in the line of duty since April.
Earlier on Friday, he paid a visit to the families of two Gauteng police officers, Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa and Sergeant Simon Masenye, who were ambushed while escorting an awaiting-trial prisoner, Jabulani Moyo, from the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court to Boksburg Prison.
During the visit, General Masemola confirmed that investigations are progressing and that law enforcement has identified other individuals believed to be involved in the attack. He emphasized that the search for the remaining suspects is ongoing and that police are confident they know who they are looking for.
“We have apprehended one suspect in connection with the murder of Sergeant Mtshweni, and efforts to track down the remaining suspects are well underway. We are confident that we will find them soon. We also believe we have arrested the correct individual, and we are certain about the identities of those still at large it is now just a matter of time before they are found,” he said.
