(The Post News)- Germiston CBD erupted in chaos this morning, Tuesday 12 August, as protesters set the Home Affairs building on fire during violent clashes over evictions.
According to William Ntladi a media liaison officer for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services the protesters are demanding the right to occupy the Pharoe Park flats without paying rent, a dispute that has escalated tensions in the area.
“The two story Home Affairs building is well alight. Currently the top floor is the on fire and we are want to break in the bottom floor to see if the fire has made damages,” said Ntladi.
Police and traffic officers along with the firefighters are currently on the scene, working to restore order and manage the heavy congestion caused by the road closures.
Ntladi urged motorists to avoid several key streets, saying authorities have closed President, Queen, and Jack streets to traffic as the unrest continues.
Emergency services have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage or reported any injuries.
