(The Post News)- Colombian senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe has died, two months after he was critically injured in a targeted shooting that deeply shocked the nation. The 39-year-old politician was attacked during a campaign rally on June 7 in the capital city, Bogotá, where he was struck by three bullets, two to the head and one to the leg.
Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and receiving intensive medical care, Uribe never fully regained consciousness and succumbed to his injuries. His death has sent ripples through the country’s political landscape and raised fresh concerns about the safety of public figures in Colombia.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the medical team at the Santa Fe Clinic, where Senator Miguel Uribe had been receiving treatment since June, confirmed that he had suffered a hemorrhage in his central nervous system and was scheduled to undergo more surgery.
This development came after he had already undergone several complex surgical procedures to stabilize his condition following the attack. Despite the intensive medical care he received, his prognosis remained uncertain.
Throughout his hospitalization, Uribe’s wife made heartfelt public appeals, urging Colombians to pray for his recovery. Her calls were met with an outpouring of support, as thousands of people participated in candlelight vigils, marches, and rallies across the country. These gatherings reflected the widespread concern and admiration for the senator, as well as a collective hope for his survival.
Uribe was participating in a political event held in a middle-class neighborhood of Bogotá when the shooting occurred. A 15-year-old suspect was apprehended while attempting to flee the scene and has since been formally charged with attempted murder, though he has pleaded not guilty. In addition to the teen suspect, several other individuals have been taken into custody on suspicion of assisting the shooter.
