(The Post News) – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that six inmates and a police officer have died following a collision between a police transport vehicle and a truck on the R101 between Mokopane and Mookgopong, Limpopo, on Thursday morning, 14 August 2025.
The statement revealed that a woman from Mokopane Police Station was also in the transport vehicle and that the car collided with a truck a few kilometers from Naboomspruit at around 09:00. The truck driver survived the collision and suffered no injuries, while emergency teams took the injured inmates to nearby hospitals. Emergency services and SAPS continue to investigate the circumstances around the collision.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, described the transport vehicle and truck collision as both “devastating” and a “tragedy.” Hadebe extends sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. Meanwhile, officials are contacting the families of those affected as they begin identifying the bodies. SAPS will confirm and release the identities when the process is complete. The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness unit is providing the necessary support to the families impacted by the tragedy.
