(The Post News) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London on Thursday as Zelenskyy seeks to gather EU support ahead of US President Donald Trump’s high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
Starmer will host the meeting at 09:30 local time this Thursday morning. It comes after yesterday’s meeting attended in Germany by European leaders, Zelenskiy, and a virtual Trump. In this call, Zelenskiy warned that Putin was “bluffing” about his willingness to end the war.
Contrary to this, Zelenskiy informed them that the Kremlin, Russia’s official seat of government, is instead preparing troops and new offensives to intensify military pressure on Ukraine’s frontlines. Therefore, Ukraine draws firm “red lines,” barring any further ceding of land, especially without its direct negotiation. A term agreed on by President Trump and the European leaders.
Trump reaffirmed the U.S. role as mediator, saying the Alaska summit “sets the table” for a follow-up with Zelenskiy. He also warned that Moscow could face “severe consequences” if it refuses to agree to a negotiated peace. Trump has not specified what these consequences would entail; however, reports suspect it may be further sanctions.
Trump has a history of threatening Russia with sanctions. It is also reported that Trump might plan to offer various economic incentives to encourage Russia to end the war. These incentives would include a lift in some of the sanctions already imposed, the use of Alaska’s natural resources, and access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals, among others.
Despite these incentives, Ukraine remains skeptical due to Russia’s previous strong relationship with Trump. Therefore, Zelenskiy continues to seek backing from European leaders who were not part of the previous meeting, including Keir Starmer.
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz attended earlier talks and have expressed their support for Ukraine.
