(The Post News)- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to become more self-reliant. However, he promised strong support for the farmers during the U.S. trade dispute.
The statement comes after President Donald Trump of the U.S. imposed tariffs on Indian exports. These tariffs are likely to slow India’s economic growth.
India faces pressure in key sectors like agriculture and manufacturing. To boost consumption, Modi announced lower Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates starting in October. Meanwhile, the government aims to stimulate spending and revive business confidence. Officials expect lower taxes to increase demand for everyday goods. Therefore, Modi called for innovation and investment in Indian industries.
He stressed the need to reduce dependence on foreign imports. The trade conflict has strained India-U.S. economic relations, but India continues to negotiate for fair trade and mutual respect. Modi reassured citizens that reforms will protect local interests. He also emphasized unity and resilience in overcoming economic challenges.
Modi announced that India would establish a new defense system called ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ after the four-day conflict with Pakistan in May. A government statement said the system will counter enemy infiltrations and strengthen India’s offensive power.
However, Defense and policy experts in India have informally used the name ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ to refer to the Russian S-400 air defense system. The name comes from a mythological weapon in Hindu tradition, symbolizing precision and power.
Modi addressed the nation on Independence Day as New Delhi faced pressure from Trump’s tariffs and failed trade talks. The trade negotiations broke down mainly over disagreements about American farm and dairy imports. Moreover, the U.S. demanded greater access to India’s agricultural markets.
India resisted, citing the need to protect its farmers and rural economy. Nevertheless, tensions between the two countries have disrupted economic cooperation. Modi urged citizens to support local industries and reduce dependence on foreign goods. He emphasized the importance of economic self-reliance in a changing global landscape.
“We place the utmost importance on farmers, fishermen, and those who raise livestock.” Modi delivered these remarks in his yearly address from the Red Fort in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the government continues to seek balanced trade terms with Washington. Modi reassured the public that India will defend its economic interests. In addition, he linked national pride with the push for self-sufficiency and resilience.
