(The Post News) – This Friday afternoon, South African music and cultural icon Sho Madjozi, born Maya Wegerif, took to Instagram to announce the birth of her first baby.
Madjozi shared the news with a picture of her newborn baby holding her finger. She also shared a series of images from her maternity shoot, where she is wearing an intricate, deep-plunging white dress.
The Instagram post is captioned, “Y’all go ahead and enjoy Friday without me.” In the caption, she also expressed that her dream of becoming a mother is now a reality.
Congratulatory messages from fans and peers soon flooded the comment section, with some fans applauding her wanting to keep the pregnancy a secret from the public. One lighthearted comment from user @ayotwilight read, “So this is where she has been,” referencing her months-long absence from social media since February.
The news, while a surprise to many, may not come as a complete shock. In July, pregnancy rumors began circulating after Sunday World reported claims from an unnamed source alleging that Madjozi was expecting a baby with rapper and producer Gemini Major (Benn Gilbert Kamoto). An anonymous source said Madjozi was ‘overjoyed’ and celebrated with a private baby shower.
According to Sunday World, neither Sho Madjozi nor Gemini Major responded when asked to comment on the rumors.
This marks a new chapter for Madjozi, whose music career has already reached international heights. The proud Limpopo-born artist blends Afro-centric braided hairstyles, Xitsonga-inspired fashion, and culture-infused sound to create her signature style. She earned international fame with John Cena and won a BET Award for Best New International Act. Madjozi has not yet shared the name or gender of her baby.
