(The Post News)- The case between the Zambian government and former president Edgar Lungu’s family over his burial resumes on Monday, 18 August morning in the Pretoria High Court.
Lungu’s family challenges the high court ruling that ordered the repatriation of the former president’s remains for his burial after he died while receiving medical attention in Johannesburg in June.
The court ruled that there was a valid agreement between the Lungu family and the state, providing that he be buried in Lusaka with the involvement of current President Hakainde Hichilema in the funeral proceedings.
On Friday, the Lungu family and the Zambian government told the court they would hold talks in a bid to settle the dispute over his final resting place.
Today, 18 August the Pretoria High Court will determine whether the Lungu family and the Zambian government have reached an agreement. The court has indefinitely postponed the case.
During the court proccedings the Zambian government representative, Adv David Mtsweni noted that, “What has happened is the family has since filed an application for direct access in the Constitutional Court.
“On those bases, the parties have agreed to allow the Constitutional Court process to unfold and in the circumstances, we have agreed that by agreement between the parties that this application for you to appeal to postpone this matter.”
